Here are a selection of observational studies completed around the uni campus and the town centre. The purpose of these was to work in the style of 1950's artists. As you we see as you view them,I start really detailed, and along the way i start to got to basic shapes and only capture what is essential, loosing a great deal of details.

These where the 1st initial sketches:The top right was of the courtyard at the Bu,and the middle was completed in one of the gardens in the aucb.
Please note that the bottom sketch is an artist study from, duck, rabbit season.
Here are a few more sketches of a courtyard on the aucb campus,I started with quick pen thumbnails to capture the form and then worked into a more detailed thumb.
After reviewing my sketches,Mike (Director),pointed out that they where far to detailed and suggest using only base shapes and line of action.
The sketches below show progression,as I change one of the thumbs, although at this point I'm still suck on details.

Before heading of down the town centre,I strongly felt the need to get used to thumb nailing,Up until know I have dove straight into a project and have been extremely worried about presentation, however this has always backfired on me,so on my way to bournemouth gardens i stopped and produce a series of fairly detailed thumbnails, the purpose of which was not only to get used to the process but to increase my confidence with making definitive lines,by using pen you have to make a decision as you cut rub it out later,by taking this approach i limited the amount of structural shapes used, only using the line of action and a little suggestion of form.

Here are a few moe observations in the style of the artists.
Although I have made some progression,Im still being far to detailed, relying on structure.

Thats more like It
At this point I feel as if Ive made a significant amount of progress in being looser, only capturing shapes and suggesting details with a few quick flowers,or a few squiggles to suggest plantation.
Playing with colour!
To avoid complete insanity,I mixed things up a little and started playing around with colour thumbnails, again the purpose of which was to capture the image with as fewer lines as possible.
The more detailed sketch to the side was an earlier study of a photo from central park new york, this was completed alongside several artists studies, the purpose of which was to capture the most important features and then to take this information and transform it in to a maurice noble style mock layout.
At this point I was looking at more detailed looney tunes backgrounds by maurice noble, the inspiration for this one was taken from the artists study I completed by maurice noble, form Duck, rabbit season.Below is the rough sketch completed prior to the clean up process.
Focusing on Tree's

These are way to detailed, however my intentions where to go out and sketch trees around the uni campus and then take them back to the studio and draw them in the style of the artists.
Artists Studies
Ok,with all the sudden rush and disorganisation on my behalf,I forgot to mention the artists studies that I have done. One of these was shown earlier. Here are 3 more studies, please note that at this point 2 are not completed, however I don't feel the need to polish them of at this point, simply because we are in the sketching and planning stages, colour theory will follow once we start producing rough layouts.
Here was an early study from 2 of maurice nobles backgrounds.
After reviewing some of the ways in which he sketched,I noticed that my line art was far to detailed and that the details would be put on later down the line once the stencilling had been completed.
The line art need to be very loose and only suggest a shape and indicate some detail,as I had done with 2 of the later town centre sketches.

Although we are not focusing on interior design
I thought it would be helpful to understand how the artists worked in different styles.
Tree madness
Up until this point i was easily distracted by details,so my director asked me to go and loosely sketch trees in as simple form as possible.
Again Im getting looser but, these still can be looser, also please note that these where scanned in at home with an a4 scanner, and as you all know animation paper is a strange size,so my apologise for any cut of bits.
Brush pen drawings
Having sat through a group crit meeting,I walked away feeling a little frustrated with the whole film process, the fee back given came across as if I had not got the point of the artitst and that I was going in the wrong direction, although this was probably not what was meant, but it did leave me thinking greatly about how the artists actually worked.
Whilst in town I sat down to have a cup of tea at the brass house overlooking the bournemouth gardens, when i noticed that I had left my pencil case behind,(which turns out that I had actually lost it)
so the only piece of equipment i had on me was a brush pen and some animation paper. So i start scribbling away ,surprisingly I had actually achieved a loose stage in which I'm happy with and personally feel as if it is much closer to reflecting the style we are looking for.
Ok,that about wraps it up,I have a few more bits and pieces to show but ill have to put these up a little later.
